Bernhard Loll obtained his Diploma degree in Chemistry at the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg. For his PhD thesis he joined the group of Prof. Saenger at the Freie Universität Berlin where he focused on the structural elucidation of photosystem II by X-ray crystallography. He was honoured with the prize for the best PhD thesis by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Subsequently, he completed a postdoctoral period at the Max-Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, working on 3’-end processing of pre-mRNA. In 2013, he became a permanent, independent faculty member at the Freie Universität Berlin. The lab is focusing on enzymes and larger, multi-subunit protein complexes applying different methods such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, along with a in depth characterization of the respective proteins/complexes. The current research focus of the lab is in on enzymes involved in terpene biosynthesis, to generate biocatalysts for the sustainable production high-value chemical scaffolds.
